Paukan is the ancient name of Bagan, the old city of two thousand temples on the bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River. This ancient capital, seat of the First Myanmar Empire, is a treasure to the people of Myanmar. Throughout the century of their existence, the temples remain a place of living worship, maintained by donations from royalty and the public.
RV Paukan was built in 2007 at the Myanmar Shipyards in Yangon for Ayravata Cruises. The Yangon River and its dockyards were commented upon over two hundred years ago as “the most favourable river in the world for naval architecture” by the first British envoy to Myanmar Captain Michael Symes of His Britannic Majesty’s 7th Regiment who arrived in Yangon in February of 1795.
Paukan might be the younger sister ship to the Pandaw which was built in 1947, but she is a bigger vessel at 183ft 955.78m) in length. Her beam is 38ft (11.58m) and draft is 3.09ft (1.14m). She runs on diesel engines, with a speed of 10 knots. Safety and emergency equipment are in place, as well as reliable communication systems.
The lovely Paukan is a boutique hotel on the river, beautifully furnished with a unique combination of modern and traditional motifs. The timber-walled cabins are furnished with colonial style cupboards, dresser and doors while the ceiling is traditional Myanmar. The single or double beds are proper and comfortable ones and not mere bunks, enough room for 55 passengers who will be looked after by a 30-member crew.
For luxury-living, Paukan has suites, deluxe or superior cabins as well as singles for guest or guides. There are two massage rooms on the lower deck offering traditional Myanmar massage designed to give soothing relaxation.
The sun deck has a stage for cultural performances, and a bar and lounge for relaxation and fun. The upper deck has a lecture / movie room with lcd projector and lcd TV screen.
Meals in the dining room on the main deck will include both East and West cuisine, and dinner menus of delicious dishes. Vegetarian meals can be prepared when informed in advance. The price is inclusive of transfer between the ship and airport, all meals, sightseeing tours and entrance fees at monuments.

An original Colonial Steamer

General Info

The RV Pandaw and other 5 similar so called “class P” design vessels was commissioned after the end of the Second World War by the Inland Water Transport Board of the government of the Union of Burma with the technical expertise of the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company at that time acting as Agents to the I.W.T. Board under an agreement.
Rv Pandaw was built in Scotland on the Clyde by the famous ships builder Yarrow & Co on 1947 with the same design of the pre-war Quarter Wheeler steamers of the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company. After being boarded up in order to protect her from the sea waves, she left Scotland for the delivery voyage to Burma on the 1950. On the 12th January 1951 she started to serve the Inland Water Transport (Irrawaddy Flotilla was nationalized on the 1st of June 1948) on the route Mandalay- Bhamo for both cargo and passengers transportation.
In the 1998 she was hired from Inland Water Transport and converted into a 16 cabins luxurious river cruise vessel by the Historian Mr. Paul Strachan and his wife, who is also the founder of the revived Irrawaddy Flotilla Company.
After 5 successful years of cultural cruises operations in the Irrawaddy and Chindwin rivers of Myanmar, IFC decided to not renew the charter contract with IWT anymore because the Old Lady Rv Pandaw needed some major repairs and refitting, an investment that IFC probably deemed not convenient as they have already built two bigger new Pandaw replicas with higher passenger capacity.
In the second half of the 2003 Interconnection Co. Ltd signed the charter agreement with IWT and the Pandaw underwent to major renovations in the Marine Side at the Yangon Dalla Dockyards. As far as the Hotel side is concerned new furniture has been specially designed and new Food and Beverage equipment have been bought.
Historic Technical Details
The principal original dimensions of these 6 class “P” vessels were 130 feet by 34 feet and the design draft was 4 feet. The carrying capacity was 476 passengers and the cargo capacity was 210 Tons. The propulsion system was originally fitted with Quarter wheels propelled by slow speed diesel engine. The engine, reverse reduction gear box seated in forward of amid ship and worm gears box, paddle wheels fitted in extreme aft of the vessel for even keel condition. The light draft of the vessel is 2 feet only and fully loaded condition is nearly 4 feet. The hull form is box shape with round bilge, spoon bow and cut up stern for paddle wheels access. According to the spare parts scarcity, the main engine and propulsion system was reinstalled with outboard propulsion system after thirty years of service. It was over 1980 that our Rv Pandaw 1947 was major repaired in Dalla Dockyard and re-engines with Hydromaster Outboard propulsion system. The main engine is a Dorman 250Hp and transmission is Hydromaster produced in UK. At that time the hull structure was renovated and the engine room converted into cargo hold and a new propulsion system was installed in the extreme aft of the vessel. The new length is now 148 Feet, breadth and width same as before. Due to the re-powering, the vessel could be able to carry more passengers and cargos due to weight saving. Seventeen years after re-powering the vessel was converted into a tourist pleasure cruise vessel in the Myanma Shipyard (Sinmalike) by the revived Irrawaddy Flotilla Company Ltd. and during their management docking was performed annually at the Dalla Dockyard. In the 2003 under the management of Interconnection Co Ltd the ship underwent a major refitting.
Rv Pandaw is listed in the “The international register of Historic Ships” of the WORLD SHIP TRUST
”…Built in Scotland in 1947, the Pandaw is the same design as the original shallow draft of Irrawaddy Flotilla Company paddle steamers that coped so well with the difficult conditions of Irrawaddy. In 1997 we discovered old Pandaw laid-up at Mandalay. It was love at first sight. But the condition was terrible. On account of her ultra draft she had used mainly on the Mandalay-Bhamo run [...].

General Info

We began in Burma. The unique Pandaw river expedition concept evolved here from the vestiges of the colonial Irrawaddy Flotilla Company. Our ships were built here and in Burma we learn to master river navigation at its worst. These lessons were applied to the other rivers of Asia.
Burma, after 1987 renamed by the regime Myanmar, is the largest mainland South-East Asian country and with the greatest variety of scenery from Himalayan peaks to tropical beaches. We have yet to meet a visitor to Burma who does not feel that this is the most beautiful, friendly and culturally interesting Asian country ever visited.
Most of the population live in three great river valleys encircled by impenetrable horseshoes of mountains. River life dominates the country and still to this day forms the main system of transportation, irrigation and from its rich fishing grounds the principal protein source for the majority of the population.
In the great Chindwin, Irrawaddy and Salween valleys two millennial of Buddhist art, architecture and archaeology survive, including of course the 3000 standing monuments at Pagan. There is no other Asian country with so vast and varied a range of cultural sites. Almost everywhere there are temples and monasteries, festivals and ceremonies. The Burmese are a deeply pious people and Buddhist activities dominate every aspect of life.
The Burmese are a very warm and friendly people who since Independence in 1947 have suffered terrible impoverishment and deprivation. We do our best to support the local domestic economy and make sure our suppliers and contractors are small local businesses. We are very careful to make sure our clients’ money falls into the right hands. Sanctions and the politically correct refusal of most NGOs and international charities to work in the country has served to exacerbate deprivation and entrench the regime further.
Our Pandaw passengers believe that by visiting Burma we are doing something to help as has been proved by the many schools our passengers have built, not to mention the outstanding contribution made by our passengers after Cyclone Nargis struck in 2008. Most of the Burmese our passengers encounter tend to agree with this assumption. These cruises are the most acclaimed luxury vacations on the Irrawaddy river.

Day 9: Minhla Forts (B/L/D)
Minhla and Gwechaung – we visit the two Italian built forts constructed to keep the British at bay from Royal Myanmar. We climb the Gwechaung hill for the view. These were captured by the British in the 3rd Anglo Myanma War. The fight for the Minhla redoubt was the only serious action in the war and the death of a young subaltern inspired Kipling to write a poem. Gwechaung, the more impressive of the forts was captured from the rear before the Myanma could turn the guns around.
Day 10: Thayetmyo Frontier Post (B/L/D)
This pleasant colonial town once guarded the border between Royal Myanmar and British Myanmar following the 2nd Anglo Myanma War of 1855, many of the buildings including the covered market date from this period. Thayet also boasts the oldest golf course in Myanmar (1885) said by the locals to be reciprocally clubbed with the Royal & Ancient St Andrews (however when we mentioned this in an early brochure we received a curt note from the R&A Secretary denying any such association). Outside the town is an extensive war cemetery where Turkish prisoners of war were laid to rest. Captured in Iraq, the Turks were transported to labour camps in Myanmar where they died in their hundreds of malaria. In the town itself we visit the market, see the colonial houses and ride out by horse cart to see the countryside and golf links.
Day 11: Prome and the Ancient Pyu (B/L/D)

General Info

Manohra Song – Dubbed “The Orient Express of the River”, this vessel is a 20-meter-long rice barge that has been carefully restored and lavishly converted into an ultra-deluxe river cruiser. Designed for up to four couples, Manohra Song explores Thailand’s famous Menam Chao Phraya, in unmatched luxury and comfort.
Built upon the original 100-year-old, solid teak hull, Manohra Song features four air-conditioned staterooms with queen-size beds, ensuite bathrooms, and an expansive saloon living and dining area with bar, plus an ample forward sun-deck lounging area, with private crew quarters and kitchen in the aft section
Designed and built by interior designer Kathleen Heinecke, the Manohra Song features warm teak, padua and mahogany woods throughout, custom-designed furniture covered with colorful Thai silks and cottons, oriental rugs, Thai and Southeast Asian art, sculpture and artifacts. Many of the accessories selected have been made by the people living along the rivers and klongs (canals) of Thailand, as well as in some of the more remote areas.
“Some of the crafts are quite sophisticated and fine, while others are more folk items that have been used by the Thai people for generations,” explained Heinecke, CEO of Polygon Designs.
“We wanted to reflect and re-create in a small way, some of the many early European influences that were embraced and encouraged by King Rama V. These resulted in a good marriage of the styles of the time, both Thai and foreign, mixing local carving expertise with the sumptuous fabrics – many of them made from Thai silks and cottons, patterns and colors,” she added.
Manohra Song is staffed by an experienced and attentive crew of four including a Chef presenting the finest traditional Thai cuisine for lunch and dinner.
A variety of custom-planned cruises are available, including the regularly scheduled two night – three day “Ayutthaya Adventure”. Stops along the way include Wat Bangna and the unique Wat Nivat. There is also a tour of the fabulous Summer Palace complex at beautiful Bang Pa-In. In Ayutthaya, there is time to explore the 17th century historical ruins, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, ride an elephant and do a little shopping.
The Chao Phraya River itself offers a never-ending vista of vignettes: temples, log-rafts, barges, long-tail boats, houses, palaces; and above all, the friendly, happy people who are never too busy to wave at visitors cruising aboard Manohra Song

3 Days
Day 1 : Bangkok – Ayutthaya (L/D)
10.00 am. Deparute from the Manohra Cruises Pier located in front of the Bangkok Marriott Resort & Spa. Once on board you ll meet your Manohra Song Chief Stewrd and the crew who will be looking after you on your trip. Cold lemon grass scented towels and a chiled fresh fruit cocktail will be waiting for you.
10:50 am. Arrive at The Temple of Dawn or Wat Arun as it is otherwise known. This is one of the best known temples in Bangkok and dates back to the ancient Ayutthaya period. The tall, elongated central Khmer-Style tower is surrounded by four minor towers, which symbolize Mount Meru, the earthly representation of the thirty-three heavens. Here you ll find pavilions containing statues of the Buddha at the most important stages of life. The beautiful architecture and fine craftsmanship mark Wat Arun as one of the most remarkable temples in Thailand. We ll stop here for a short guided tour and depart at 11:30 am. There also a chance to have your fortune told here also.
10:50 am. Arrive at the Royal Barges national Museum. This is one of Bangkok s most fascinating sights and something you will not see anywhere else in the world. The museum is home to an incredible collection of gided and ornately decorated boats with magnificently carved prows. His Majesty the King s personal barge, Suphannahongse, can be seen here. Built in 1911 to resemble a mythical swan, the boat is 46 meters long and was carved from a single tree. All the barges are unique and incredible works of craftsmanship.
12:45 pm. Lunch underway enjoy our Thai cuisine prepared by your personal on-board chef. Shortly after your lunch, the Manohra song will pass the island of Koh Kret in Nonthaburi Province, an island which was “man-made” in the last 100 years when a canal was buil to shorten the journey around a circuitous bend in the river. The island is populated by Mon people, one of Thailand s many ethnic minority groups, who use the river s fine clay to produce earthenware pots. Spend the afternoon relaxing on board, watching the vignettes of river life unfold as they float by. At 4 pm we ll serve a traditional English afternoon tea of finger sandwiches, scorned and dainties, with selection of teas.
04:30 pm. A quick stp at Wat Pathum Khong Ka to feed the fish – a simple way of gaining merit and good luck. This promotes the Buddhist cycle of life by feeding the fish so they in turn can produce life. Some of them carp fish are giants !
05:30 pm. Arrive at Wat Bang Nam where we cam watch the sunset and then moor for the night. Wat Bang Na was constructed in 1777 by a mon family who moved from Ayutthaya. One of the more curious sights within the compound of this temple is the body of the 4th chief monk of this temple who died in 1988 but whose mummified body remains in excellent condition and is today housed in a glass enclosure.
07:30 pm. Relax and freshen up in your private ensuite stateroom and then return to the deck for aperitifs and Thai canapes.
08:00 pm. With Wat Bang Na, as a dramatic backdrop, a dinner of Thail traditional dishes will be served. Relax on deck with a glass of wine or digest if before retiring to your stateroom for your night on the river.
Day 2 : Ayutthaya – Bang Pa In (B/L/D)
07:30 am. An early start and chance to makes of Wat Bang Na and tour the temple. Thai Buddhists believe that by making merit, they earn happiness, peace in life and the chance to process in their next life. Making merit with the Monks is a wonderfully harmonious way to start the day.
08:00 am. We ll get underway for the ancient Thai capital of Ayutthaya.
09:00 am. Freshly prepared continental breakfast served. A morning of gentle cruising up Chao Phraya , through the Thai countryside. Recline on a deck lounger and watch he river life float past.
01:00 pm. An Italian luncheon of pasta and salad served underway.
02:00 pm. Arrive at Wat Pananchoeng to begin your tour Wat Pananchoeng is an old monastery housing Thailand s largest ancient Buddha image. This image, known as Luang Po To was made in 1344. The Chinese revere this image as their God Protector since much of the sailing done ten was by the Chinese. A waiting limousine with guide will then transfer you to Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The ancient was founded in 1350 by king U-Thong and it was from here that the Siamese ruled their Kingdom for 417 years. You ll spend the afternoon exploring Ayutthaya in the company of our expert guide. There ll even be a chance for you to experience riding on the back of an elephant. As Ayutthaya is such a large area, the limousine driver will wait for you and take you on a tour of several areas of the ancient city.
05:30 pm. From Ayutthaya, you ll transfer by limousine to Bang Pa In, one of the 16 districts of Ayutthaya where you ll rejoin the Manohra Song. Along the way, you may wish to buy a bag of fish or a cage of small birds for you to release back to nature This is a wonderful gesture and makes merit. Across from Bang Pa In is Wat Nivat-one of the more intriguing Bugghist temples and this is where we ll moor for the night. Wat Nivat was constructed at the command of King Rama V in 1878, in the style of an English Gothic church. The Temple s stained glass windows and unusual architecture make it one of the most distinctive Buddhist temples anywhere in Thailand.
06:30 pm. Relax and freshen up in your private ensuite stateroom and then return to the deck for aperitifs and Asian-inspired canapes.
08:00 pm. For your second night on the river, we ll serve an Ayutthaya-inspired Thai dinner.
Day 3 : Bang Pa In – Bangkok (B/L)
08:00 am. Wake up to the taste a full English breakfast, freshly prepared to your order from the Manohra Song kitchecn.
09:00 am. Guided tour of Wat Nivat.
09:30 am. From Wat Nivat it is a short walk to the Bang Pa In Summer Palace The original Bang Pa In Palace was built by King Thong on the island and was used as a country residence for the later kings of the Ayutthaya period. However, after the capital moved to Bangkok, Bang Pa In was abandoned for 80 years, to be revived by King Rama V. He commanded the construction of additional buildings-theatres, temples and monuments in a mixture of European, Chiness and Thai styles.
We ll explore the palace grounds by electric carts although the site can be easily walked.
10:30 am. Get underway for Bang Sai Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Center.
12:00 pm. A short cruise downriver from Bang Pa In is the Bang Sai village, which enjoys the patronage of Her Majesty the Queen. Here you can see a variety of Thai houses in regional styles and see how Thailand s rural people make handicrafts such as fern basketry, silk dyeing, wood carving, miniature hand-modeled dolls and traditional furniture. A great place to shop for Thai handicrafts. After a short guided tour, we will depart at around 1 pm.
01:30 pm. Light Thai luncheon underway.
04:00 pm. Light afternoon tea served on board as we head back towards Bangkok.
10.50 am Arrive at The Temple of Dawn or Wat Arun as it is otherwise known. This is one of the best known temples in Bangkok and dates back to the ancient Ayutthaya period. The tall, elongated central Khmer-style tower is surrounded by four minor towers, which symbolize Mount Meru, the earthly representation of the thirty-three heavens. Here you’ll find pavilions containing statues of the Buddha at the most important stages of life. The beautiful architecture and fine craftsmanship mark Wat Arun as one of the most remarkable temples in Thailand. We’ll stop here for a short guided tour and depart at 11.30 am. There also a chance to have your fortune told here also.
11:50 am Arrive at the Royal Barges National Museum. This is one of Bangkok’s most fascinating sights and something you will not see anywhere else in the world. The museum is home to an incredible collection of gilded and ornately decorated boats with magnificently carved prows. His Majesty the King’s personal barge, Suphannahongse, can be seen here. Built in 1911 to resemble a mythical swan, the boat is 46 meters long and was carved from a single tree. All the barges are unique and incredible works of craftsmanship.
12:45 pm Lunch underway. Enjoy our Thai cuisine prepared by your personal on-board chef. Shortly after your lunch, the Jao Ying Noi Cruise will pass the island of Koh Kret in Nonthaburi Province, an island which was ‘man-made’ in the last 100 years when a canal was built to shorten the journey around a circuitous bend in the river. The island is populated by the Mon people, one of Thailand’s many ethnic minority groups, who use the river’s fine clay to produce earthenware pots. Spend the afternoon relaxing on board, watching the vignettes of river life unfold as they float by. At 4 pm we’ll serve a traditional English afternoon tea of finger sandwiches, scones and dainties, with a selection of teas.
